  • Issues with the microphone, such as it is not plugged in correctly or muted
  • Audio device not set as the default recording device

  • The voice chat record threshold is too high
  • Background applications interfere with the game

Now that you are familiar with the reasons voice chat is not working in Rainbow Six Siege, let’s guide you through how to fix it.

Fixes for Rainbow Six Siege Voice Chat Not Working (100% Proven)

You can apply the following solutions sequentially to fix the R6 voice chat not working issue. You do not need to try all the fixes; stop when the problem is solved.

Fix 1: Perform some basic checks

Sometimes, a problem is not as big as it appears and can be solved with the simplest solutions. Hence, before trying advanced solutions, it is recommended to try the preliminary fixes below.

Check the microphone

  • Make sure your microphone is connected to the computer correctly.
  • If you are using a headset, ensure it is plugged into the right jack.
  • Test your microphone in other apps like Discord to ensure it is not damaged.
  • Click on the speaker icon in the extreme right corner of the taskbar and unmute the microphone if it is muted.

Check your in-game settings

  • Open Rainbow Six Siege.
  • Navigate to the Options and then choose Audio.
  • Ensure the correct microphone is chosen as your Microphone Device.
  • Depending on your preference, enable Push to Talk or Open Mic.
  • Next, move the Microphone Volume slider to adjust it to an appropriate level.

Fix 2: Set your audio device as the default recording device

No default recording device may have caused the Rainbow Six Siege voice chat not working issue. Hence, below is how to set your desired audio device as the default to solve the problem.

  • First, right-click the Speaker icon in the right corner of the taskbar and choose Sounds from the on-screen menu.
  • Once the Sound window appears, navigate to the Recording tab, select your desired audio device, and then click Set Default.
  • Next, navigate to the Playback tab, choose the desired device, and then click Set Default.
  • Lastly, save the changes by clicking Apply and OK.

Fix 3: Update the audio driver

A driver is a piece of software your system needs to understand the instructions you give to your audio device to execute them perfectly. If the driver is outdated, the communication between the system and the audio device breaks, resulting in issues like R6 voice chat not working. Hence, below is how to update the driver for your audio device to solve the problem.

  • In the first step, right-click the Windows icon in the extreme left corner of the taskbar and choose Device Manager from the menu that appears.
  • Once the Device Manager appears, double-click on the Sound, video, and game controllers category to expand it.
  • Next, right-click on your audio device and choose Update Driver from the on-screen context menu.
  • In this step, choose to search automatically for drivers from the on-screen options.
  • Wait until Windows detects, downloads, and installs the required drivers.
  • Lastly, complete the process by restarting your computer.

Fix 4: Create a Rainbow Six Siege exception in Windows Firewall

Your antivirus software may prevent the game from functioning smoothly and cause the Rainbow Six Siege voice not working problem. While the steps to add the game as an exception in the antivirus program differ from software to software (you need to check your software manual to learn how to do it), below is how to perform this action on the Windows Defender Firewall, the built-in Windows security software.

  • First, type firewall in Windows search and choose Windows Defender Firewall from the on-screen search results.
  • Once the Windows Defender Firewall appears, choose the option to Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall from the left panel.
  • Next, find and select the Rainbow Six Siege checkbox in the list of programs.
  • Lastly, click on the OK button to save the changes you have made in the previous steps.

Fix 5: Change the voice chat record threshold

A too-high voice chat record threshold may be the reason R6 voice chat is not working. Hence, you can decrease the voice chat threshold.

  • First, open your Steam client and go to the Library tab.
  • Second, find and right-click Rainbow Six Siege in the installed games and choose Play Game from the on-screen menu.
  • Next, click the Gear-shaped icon in the home screen of the game and choose Options from the on-screen drop-down menu.
  • In this step, navigate to the Audio tab and click on the Voice Chat Record Threshold option.
  • Next, set the high value to nearly 35.
  • Lastly, click Apply to save the changes you have made in the previous step.

Fix 6: Close all conflicting background applications

Some background apps, especially those that use the microphone, interfere with the game’s functionality, causing the Rainbow Six Siege voice chat not working error. Hence, you can follow the steps below to close these conflicting applications.

  • First, right-click the empty space of the Taskbar and choose Task Manager from the on-screen options.
  • Second, navigate to the Processes tab in the Task Manager, right-click on the processes related to the UniFi controller software, and then click on End task. Repeat this step to end all conflicting tasks.
  • Lastly, go to the Startup tab, right-click on the conflicting application, and then choose Disable.

  • Second, choose Sounds or the option to Open Sound Settings.
  • In this step, navigate to the Recording tab.

  • Lastly, uncheck the option to Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device under the Advanced tab.

Fix 8: Reinstall Rainbow Six Siege

If you tried all the above solutions but none of them worked, uninstalling and reinstalling the game is the last resort. Below is how to do it.

  • First, right-click Rainbow Six Siege in the Steam library and choose Manage.
  • Second, choose Uninstall from the Manage options menu.

Note: If you use Ubisoft Connect, go to your game library, click on the game, and select Uninstall.
