  • Non-availability of enough free space 
  • Interruption from third-party software, viruses, or malware 
  • Power issues 
  • Incompatible or outdated drivers

How to Fix “There was a problem resetting your PC”

You can solve the “There was a problem resetting your PC” error on your Windows 10/11 computer by applying fixes such as performing system file checking, a fresh start, system restore, rebooting your PC in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), disabling ReAgent.exe, and executing startup repair. 

However, please note that you are not required to try all the solutions below. Simply start with the first one and stop when the issue is resolved. 

Fix 1: Check the system files 

The files crucial for the reset process may be damaged or missing, resulting in the “There was a problem resetting your PC” error. Hence, you can follow the steps below to check and fix the corrupted system files. 

  • To begin with, apply the Windows + S shortcut to access Windows search. 
  • Next, type cmd in the search bar, right-click Command Prompt (the first search result), and choose Run as administrator from the available options. 
  • In the Administrator Command Prompt window, copy and paste the following command and press Enter to execute it.

  • After waiting for 10 to 15 minutes, copy and paste the following command into the command line and press Enter. 

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  • Lastly, restart your computer to complete the above process.

Fix 2: Perform a fresh start 

Windows Security has a Fresh Start option that allows you to reset your computer without deleting your personal files and restores your system to a problem-free state. However, we recommend creating a backup of all your important files and license keys before proceeding with the steps below. 

  • In the first step, right-click the Start button and choose Settings from the menu that appears. 
  • Once the Settings panel appears, choose Update & Security and then navigate to the Windows Security option.

  • Next, navigate to the Device performance & health option on the right panel. 
  • Now, go to the Fresh Start option and then click Additional Info. 
  • Lastly, click Get Started and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the process. 

Fix 3: Try system restore 

If you have a previously created restore point, you may restore your system to the previous state before the “There was a problem resetting your PC.” Hence, if there is a restore point already created on your system, below is how to perform a system restore. 

  • First, apply the Windows + S shortcut to open the search on your computer. 
  • Next, type System Restore in the on-screen search box and choose Create a restore point from the search results. 
  • Now, navigate to the System Protection tab in the System Properties window. 
  • In this step, click System Restore and then click Next when the System Restore window appears.

  • Now, confirm your restore point and click Finish. 
  • Click Yes when a confirmation prompt appears. 
  • Lastly, wait for the restoration to complete and then restart your computer. 

Fix 4: Reboot the PC via Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)

The Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) allows you to repair your system and reset it safely, fixing the “There was a problem resetting your PC” Windows 11/10 error. Hence, below is how to reboot your computer using Windows Recovery Environment. 

  • In the first step, right-click the Start button and click Settings to open it. 
  • Next, choose the Update & Security setting. 
  • In this step, select Recovery from the Update & Security menu. 
  • Now, navigate to the Troubleshoot option and click Reset this PC. 
  • You can now choose from Keep my files and Remove everything options. 
  • Lastly, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset. 

Fix 5: Turn off ReAgent.exe 

According to some users, disabling the ReAgent.exe fixes the issues related to resetting the computer. Hence, you can follow the directions below to disable ReAgent.exe. 

  • First, click on the Start button and then type cmd in the search bar. 
  • Next, right-click Command Prompt in the search results and choose Run as administrator from the available options. 
  • In this step, copy and paste reagentc /disable in the command line and press Enter. 
  • Next, copy and paste reagentc /enable in the command line and press Enter to re-enable ReAgent.exe. 
  • Lastly, you can exit the Command Prompt and restart your PC.
